In a previous post, I shared my DIY master bath remodel and all what I did. Now, I have to fix the 1/2 bath downstairs that I took the cabinet from.
This room is simple. It has a cabinet with sink and a toilet so it's not huge (3x7') and no medicine cabinet to remove.
I found a cabinet I like but its a different style than what I took out. The one I took out had a foot board at the bottom so you couldn't see the base of the cabinet. Only the most basic and not so good looking cabinets I found at the home improvement stores had a foot board and the one I like of course sits on 4 legs and has no foot board. Therefore you can see the floor under the cabinet a little. So that means I have to re-do the vinyl flooring in the bathroom.
In this room, I decided to put up vinyl wallpaper like I did in the master bath and this time, I went with a distressed board look. It has some browns, cream and a hint of gray in it. And I put a fairly basic tan paint on the walls.
I decided to go with the Lifeproof vinyl plank flooring from Home Depot because of the anti-microbial properties. It may not mean anything but since I installed it in my master bath and was already familiar with it, it just seemed to make sense. This time I went with a multi-width board in Walton Oak. The major difficulty I've had in picking out a vinyl plank color, is that you can't see a nice large picture of the floor already in place or even a blown up square of the floor in place on the home improvement websites. You just don't get a good idea of what colors are in the flooring.
This is also a small 1/2 bath about 3'x7' which is fine but there was a lot of cutting to do around the pipes/toilet/door frame and it took me about 8 hours to get done. Ridiculous I know but there you have it.
By the way, if you are going to have a go at putting down the vinyl plank flooring yourself, that's fine but you really need a jig saw. You can use a utility knife for short straight cuts but that will run through blades and kill your hand and waste precious time getting the floor done. A jig saw will save you time, effort and frustration. The right tools for a project is almost always worth it.
I also decided to toss out the thin base boards that was originally installed in the house because they were just plain and boring. This is a small enough room that I figured we (my hubby and I) could install ourselves. I bought some boards at Home Depot that were about $4 each so they were fairly inexpensive and a total of 3 boards did the trick being 8 ft long each.
Unfortunately, we ran into some trouble. Our cabinet wouldn't fit with the trim to the sides and behind the cabinet so we had to take them back out, install the cabinet and then fit them in. Not hard but I wish we figured it out before hand.
The cabinet was also a tight fit and we forgot something important. We had to take the door trim off before we could pull out the cabinet and therefore we should've put the cabinet in first, which we didn't do. So that meant we wound up gouging and scratching the newly painted wall getting the cabinet and sink top in. So there was more wall painting and patching to do but at least we got the faucet installed while the sink top was sitting on my kitchen counter, instead of crawling under the cabinet.
I also found a pretty mirror with some color and interest to it and replaced the single unframed slab of mirror on the wall and replaced my hollywood lights with the bell shaped lights and that alone was worth it but the cabinet and flooring look great too. I also put some walnut colored floating shelves above toilet.
After touching up the paint, caulking around the sink and painting the nails in the base boards white and hanging up towel holder and some wall hangings, I'm calling this project done and I'm really happy with how it turned out.
So here's some before and after pictures. (The green is before and the brown is after)
